Moose

Species guide · Large game

Know the animal and habitat

Moose are associated with northern forests, wetlands, regenerating areas and riparian habitat. Their large size can make them easy to see but exceptionally demanding to recover.

Identification comes first

Know the current legal animal definition, including any sex or antler restrictions, before hunting. A large body is not enough for legal identification.

How the habitat changes the hunt

Water, muskeg, dense willow and remote access can make the place an animal stands more important than its distance from you. Think through extraction before committing.

Before the shot

Use a controlled shot with an appropriate large-game hunting load and clear vital-area presentation. Do not let animal size encourage casual shot placement.

Recovery and use

A moose can yield hundreds of pounds of usable material. A realistic plan may require partners, multiple trips and rapid cooling. The recovery problem should be solved in principle before the shot.
