Know the animal and habitat
Caribou use different northern habitats according to population, including tundra, boreal forest and mountain ranges. Do not present all caribou as one interchangeable migrating herd. Caribou support northern food traditions and Indigenous communities, but conservation condition varies sharply by population and herd. A legal season elsewhere does not establish that a particular herd is open or that a visitor may hunt it. Ethical decisions start with the specific herd, local conservation guidance, harvesting rights and current authorization, not antler size.
Identification comes first
Both male and female caribou can carry antlers. Antlers alone do not establish sex or whether an animal is legal. Learn the local agency’s sex-identification criteria for the season and verify the required animal definition before considering a shot. Large spreading hooves and seasonal coloration are contextual features, not a substitute for proper identification.
How the habitat changes the hunt
Before the hunt, verify the exact herd and management area, season, resident or nonresident eligibility, licence, tag, draw or outfitter requirements, sex or age restrictions and closures. Indigenous harvesting rights and conservation or co-management rules require appropriate local guidance; do not generalize one licence category to everyone. Respect animals rather than chasing or disrupting their movements.
Before the shot
Retain the same safe positive-identification and demonstrated-field-ability principles used throughout this Resource Centre. Remote terrain demands realistic planning for partners, communication, weather, navigation and recovery distance before a shot is considered.
Recovery and use
Plan meat cooling and pack-out for the actual terrain, weather and distance. Recovery and full use of edible meat belong in the decision before the shot, not after it.
