United States Hunting Regulations

U.S. hunting requirements are primarily state-specific, with federal and location-specific rules also applying in some circumstances. Verify the current rules for the exact state, species and property before hunting.

Start with the state wildlife agency

Confirm the current hunting licence, species, season, zone or unit, method, tagging and reporting requirements for the state where the hunt occurs.

Check federal requirements where relevant

Federal rules can apply in addition to state rules, including migratory-bird requirements and rules for National Wildlife Refuge System lands. Refuge-specific permits or conditions may also apply.

Verify the exact property

Public-land units, refuges and other managed areas may have rules beyond the general state regulations. Private-land access and local restrictions also need to be confirmed separately.

Use current official information

Seasons and regulations change. Recheck the official state and, when applicable, federal or site-specific source rather than relying on an old saved page, screenshot or second-hand summary.

Keep documents and reporting requirements straight

Know what licences, stamps, permits, tags or harvest reports are required and when they must be completed.

Legality is the starting point

A legal hunt still requires sound identification, a defensible shot decision, a recovery plan and meaningful use of the animal where applicable.
