Setting Up & Proving Your Hunting Rifle
A zeroed rifle is not automatically a proven hunting system. Confidence comes from showing that the rifle, optic, mounts, ammunition and shooter produce repeatable results together.

Start with mechanical confidence
Before live fire, confirm the firearm and optic are set up according to their manufacturers’ instructions and that mounts and accessible fasteners are secure. Use the exact ammunition you intend to evaluate.
Establish a repeatable zero
Use a stable position and deliberate groups. Adjust based on the group’s center rather than chasing each individual hole. Confirm the result with another group after making changes.
Record the setup
Note the ammunition, bullet weight, zero distance, approximate group size and relevant sight settings. A simple record helps distinguish a real change later from uncertain memory.
Test more than one good group
One excellent group can happen by chance. Repeatability across groups and sessions provides stronger evidence that the system is behaving consistently.
Confirm after meaningful changes
Travel, a hard impact, removed optics, maintenance, ammunition changes or an unexplained shift in accuracy can justify another confirmation. Do not discover a changed zero on an animal.
Move into field positions
Once the equipment is proven from a stable rest, test the shooter. Practice with the supports and positions you can realistically create while hunting, at distances that increase only as repeatability is demonstrated.
Learn the cold first shot
Hunting opportunities often begin with a cold barrel and no warm-up shots. Pay attention to where deliberate first shots land rather than judging the system only after a long range session.
Proving is an ongoing process
The purpose is not to certify the rifle forever. It is to maintain current evidence that the complete system still performs within the standard you rely on in the field.
